Charley Benetto, a former baseball player, now leads a troubled life. Abandoned by his father when he was a teenager, Charley’s life has spiralled out of control. He is an alcoholic in the throes of depression, and has successfully alienated his loved ones.
Charley is unemployed, estranged from his family, and deeply embedded in financial crisis. All of this leads him to become suicidal. When he learns of his daughter’s upcoming wedding, he realizes that he isn’t invited and this causes him to become even more upset. One night, he decides to take his life and goes back to the town he grew up in. In his drunken haze, he causes an accident due to a wrong turn.
He then goes to his old house and is surprised to find his mother there. His mother had passed away eight years ago. He gets the one chance that most people crave for, to have one last day with a loved one. He has a heart to heart with his mother and she helps him sort out his issues that stem from childhood trauma. He seeks forgiveness and learns all about his mother’s love and sacrifices. This experience helps him make a decision to get his life back on track. He soon tries to make amends with his family.
Does his family welcome him back? Does he succeed in turning over into a new leaf? How did he manage to get out of the accident wreckage? For One More Day reveals all the answers and touches a chord with readers’ hearts. The book was adapted for the television screen, and was titled Oprah Winfrey Presents: Mitch Albom's For One More Day.
